How do domains work?

Registering a domain doesn't automatically make your website appear when visitors enter your domain into a Web browser. You have to upload your website to a company that hosts the site and assigns a numeric address, called an IP address, to your domain. Your domain and associated IP address are stored in a database with every other domain and associated IP address. When visitors enter your domain into a Web browser, your domain works like an address forwarding service by forwarding visitors to the IP address where your website is stored. We use domain names instead of IP addresses because most people find it easier to remember a name rather than a series of numbers.

When you register a domain, you do not have to create and upload a website. You can also:

Sell it. Domains can be a great investment. If you have registered a domain that you are not using, maybe someone else can. Log in to your Account Manager and set up a For Sale parked page for your domain. Don't forget to include your contact information.
Protect your brand online. The more domains you register, the better. If you buy a .com domain, consider also buying the .net, .org, and others. Also consider buying domain names of misspellings of your domain name. Prevent others from registering a similar domain to yours—just to steal away your customers. What to do with all these names? Forward them to your main domain.
Hold on to it. Maybe you haven’t decided what to do with your new domain. Don’t worry – there’s no rush. You can leave it parked with us for the length of your registration.

For new .COM and .NET domains and updates, it may take up to eight hours for changes to become effective. It may take up to 48 hours for changes made to all other domain extensions to become effective. This is because of the number of networks and agencies involved. Delays apply to all domains and registrars. Please allow for this delay when planning websites or configuring a domain to work with your email.

But how do you find and choose the RIGHT domain name?

You’ll need to do a Domain Search to determine if the domain name you’ve chosen is available. But there are some other considerations you need to know:

• A “dot com” (.com) domain is the most common extension, rather than a .net, .org. domain. There are still LOTS of .com names available, but you’ll have to be much more clever to find one.

• Trademarks and copyrights – you cannot register a trademarked or copyrighted name if you don’t own the name, like www.Google.com. That also means that you cannot build a trademarked or copyrighted name into your domain name, such as www.MyFavoriteGoogle.com. The company who owns the name might use legal means to stop you, like a Cease and Desist order or lawsuit. You can look up the name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (http://www.uspto.gov/ ) and your state’s trademark database.

• Pick a short name. Short names are easiest to remember. They also reduce the chances for misspellings.

• The name www.DomainsForYou.com would be better than www.Domains4You.com. Avoid numbers, hyphens, and abbreviations unless they are part of your brand name or the correct spelling of a word.

• The best domain name is one you can tell a person verbally and they will be able to remember it without writing it down. I have a website at www.insurance-claim-secrets.com. But www.ClaimSecrets.com is much easier to remember, so that's the name I give out. (I own that one, too.)

• Your domain name should include your brand name and/or keywords that make your product easier for customers to find. Rather than a non-descriptive name like smithfamily.com, a better choice might be smithfamilyjewelry.com.

• When you find your best domain name, register it immediately. Hesitation might allow someone else to swoop in and get it first.
